Wheel Redesign

The rover's original wheels deformed under load and lost traction on loose or uneven terrain — a recurring issue during field testing. I led a redesign focused on improving stiffness and ground clearance without adding significant weight.
I tested multiple spoke geometries and materials in SolidWorks, iterating on spoke count, rim thickness, and hub interface to find a design that balanced stiffness against traction and mass. Prototypes were manufactured with FDM printing to validate fit before committing to final materials.
The result is a stiffer wheel with better ground clearance, reducing deformation under load while keeping the traction profile the terrain requires.
